This book is about the minute amount of light that can be obtained from mineral grains, principally of quartz or feldspar, when stimulated by a beam of light comparable in strength to sunlight or by a team of infrared radiation. Albiet minute, this emitted light can be used to determine the years that have elapsed since the sediment containing the grains was last consigned to darkness by burial; this optical dating is now established as an important tool for geoscientists concerned with sedimentary processes of the last half million years or so. It is a gentle way of treating the grains with a more delicate approach and has a particular fascination. Besides hoping to communicate some of that fascination to readers, the author has set out to give an understanding of the basic procedures of optical dating, and of its scope and limitations.
